Good afternoon CHMS families,

In the next several weeks at CHMS, your child will participate in the annual state assessments called the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English language arts (ELA), and mathematics. Grade 8 students will also take the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) assessment.

Educators use these tests to see how students are progressing at each grade level so they are prepared for college and careers when they graduate high school. Parents/guardians can also use the same high-quality tests to see how their child is performing on the standards, especially given that we did not test last year.  This year, the assessment will be used mainly to learn how students are doing as well as to target resources and supports for educators and schools. To learn more about the assessments or explore the Smarter Balanced Practice Tests (http://ct.portal.airast.org/training-tests) with your child, visit the Connecticut Smarter Balanced website (www.ct.gov/sde/SmarterBalanced) to find additional information for families.

Students will be administered these tests on the following dates and times:

Session 1- 4/29 & 4/30

(10:00 am -12:00 pm)

NGSS- Next Generation Science Standards- 8th Grade Only

Make-up testing

*(Please note there are two dates listed for each test session to allow for students to have an ample amount of time to complete the test. However, if a CVL learner finishes on the first day of the testing session, they do not need to come in for the second date of the testing session).

Information for CVL Learners

CVL learners will NOT test with their designated cohort, but will test in a socially distanced separate setting. (i.e. cafeteria, computer lab, or library)

CVL learners taking the test in-school should be dropped off at CHMS between 7:50am and 8:15am on the designated testing day and picked up between 10:15am-10:30am. (Breakfast will be provided)

CVL learners should bring their school issued chromebook and personal headphones on the day of testing. (if students do not have headphones, a school issued pair will be provided)

Important note about electronic devices.

All electronic devices including cell phones, smart watches, etc are not allowed during the testing window.

Here is the calendar of spirit days!  Dress up for each day to earn tickets to win a raffle at the end of the month

Baseball and Softball Sign ups are happening now!!

We are pleased to announce that Chippens Hill Middle School will be offering an after-school interscholastic spring season which will include travel baseball and softball teams. Students will have the opportunity to try-out for one of our baseball/softball teams, and if chosen, will practice and travel to other schools for competitive games. We are very excited to be offering this type of after school program this season, but will be adhering to strict guidelines to ensure your student’s safety. There will be travel and competition between Chippens Hill, Northeast, Greene-Hills, and West Bristol.

At this time, CVL students are eligible to participate and will need to be brought to school by 3:00pm for practices and games. Student eligibility will be based on trimester 2 grades and conduct. Any student who received a grade below a 65 in any class (Core or Encore), and/or received two or more grades of an X for conduct will not be eligible to participate. Athletes will also need a physical on file with the school nurse in order to participate. Please contact Michelle Bellemare at michellebellemare@bristolk12.org if you are unsure of your child’s school physical.

If your student is interested in trying out for a team, please fill out the form, and FamilyID which are linked below by Friday, April 23. If you have any questions please contact Katie Pepe, Athletic Coordinator at Chippens Hill by email at katiepepe@bristolk12.org
