Chippens Hill Middle School

Learning Center

The CHMS Learning Center program is a multi-age specialized program designed for students who benefit from an alternative learning environment that provides consistent structure, clear expectations, and a low student to teacher ratio. The program focuses on providing students the   opportunity to identify, control, and resolve any challenges that they may be dealing with in the school setting so that they can be successful, self-directed, responsible students within their school community.

The curriculum and instruction includes:

  • learning-how-to-learn “metacognition” strategies
  • cooperative learning projects
  • a strong sense of community and social interaction with peers and adults
  • meaningful and challenging work
  • activities for self-expression, self-knowledge, and self-assessment
  • activities that support a variety of learning styles
  • activities to foster interdependence
  • activities for learning economic and practical life independence
  • school and community service projects
