2026 Bristol Paraeducator of the Year
The Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Award honors the extraordinary dedication and impact of paraeducators—those quiet yet powerful forces in our schools who play an essential role in shaping student success. Named in memory of Anne Marie Murphy, a cherished paraeducator who lost her life protecting her students during the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, this award stands as a testament to the compassion, bravery, and unwavering support paraeducators bring to their roles every day.
Paraeducators are the heart of many classrooms. They offer crucial support to teachers, guide small-group instruction, and provide individualized academic and behavioral assistance. Most importantly, they ensure every student feels seen, heard, and valued—often becoming a child’s strongest advocate and biggest cheerleader.
This year, we are thrilled to recognize Mr. Daniel Costa of Bristol Central High School, as the 2026 Bristol Paraeducator of the Year. Daniel embodies everything this award stands for—and so much more.
Although Daniel comes from a family of educators, his professional path didn’t begin in a classroom. His early work involved directing Scout and Camp programs, managing facilities, and overseeing budgets and operations. But in 2019, he took a leap into the world of education, accepting a position as a 1:1 paraeducator for a student with significant special education programming needs.
From day one, Daniel approached his role with a deep sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to learn. He quickly became a leader among his peers, not through volume, but through action. Always thoughtful and composed, Daniel would often coach others on strategies he’d developed or refined through his practice. His demeanor may be quiet, but his presence is powerful; he's detail-oriented, intentional, and completely centered on what is best for his students. No matter the situation, he remains calm, kind, and grounded.
Recently, Daniel transitioned into our Community Vocational Program, where his work continues to have a profound impact. His dedication to student success is unwavering.
The day Daniel was surprised by the Award was unforgettable. As the announcement was made, a wave of applause and cheers erupted from students and staff alike. The joy in the room was palpable, and yes, there were a few tears. A colleague passing by summed it up best: “There’s no one more deserving. I’m so happy he’s the Para of the Year.”
Daniel, thank you for your compassion, your quiet leadership, and your tireless commitment to students. You make a difference every single day, and we are so proud to recognize you as the 2026 Bristol Paraeducator of the Year.
With gratitude,
