Spanish
In the World Language department, our primary goal is to help all students develop linguistic proficiency and cultural sensitivity through the study of Spanish. At the middle school level, Spanish is offered only to 7th and 8th grade students who are recommended by their 6th grade teachers. These students complete the high school Spanish 1 course over two years, allowing them to earn high school credit by the end of 8th grade upon completion of Spanish 1.
Upon entering high school, middle school students who complete Spanish 1 will begin with Spanish 2 and have the opportunity to progress through the sequence, ultimately reaching AP Spanish by their senior year. This pathway provides students the chance to earn college credit while in high school.
We believe that all students can benefit from second language instruction. While we recognize that not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way, we are committed to giving students the opportunity to develop language proficiency to a degree commensurate with their individual abilities. In the 21st century, the need for effective communication and sensitivity to other cultures has become even more important, and we believe that the study of Spanish is essential to meeting these global needs.
