Supporting Our Students and Community
Dear Families,
It is with profound sadness that we learned of the heartbreaking news involving Mileena Burnham Matthews, a former Bristol Public Schools student, who, along with her mother and little sister, was killed in a tragic act of violence Friday night in Plainville. This loss is deeply felt, and our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragedy. We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
I have reached out to the Plainville Superintendent to offer our community’s condolences and support, and to ensure we are aligned in providing care for those affected.
We understand that news like this can be difficult for both students and adults to process. In times like these, it is important that we come together as a community with care, compassion, and understanding. To support our students and families, we have gathered resources to help guide conversations with children about grief, loss, and traumatic events. These resources are attached to this post and we encourage you to use them as needed.
Please take time to check in with your children, listen to their concerns, and reassure them that they are supported. If your child may benefit from additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school.
As always, we remain committed to the well-being of every member of our school community.
In sympathy,
Iris White
Superintendent of Schools
